I definitely think you should replace the motor. Tow your car to Brooklyn, NY. there are plenty of shops here that will do a replacement for a decent price. Maybe $600 plus engine cost.
I used to live in Queens on the border with Brooklyn. There are plenty of shops (not all of them good) that will swap the engine for decent price. I remember in 99, I cracked the engine in my 88 Grand Prix, and had it replaced with a used one for $600 total cost in a shop in Brooklyn. The engine run just fine till I sold the car.
You can probably get a used motor for about $ 1,200 shipped to the shop of your choice, and for another $ 1,000 have it replaced. You may be on the road for $ 2,500 including all the fluids and miscellaneous staff.

Might be pricey. Depends on the job, I'm sure.... I've had studs break while half of it was stuck in the block on the old camaro. That was pretty expensive, since they weld something to whatever is there and drill into the old stud, it was couple hundred.
A couple hundred! Sheesh, if my manifold(s) get any worse, I'm heading to Brooklyn! Of course, it would probably cost several hundred for a hotel around there...
I would definitely repair your Mountaineer. It will be cheaper in the long run, especially if you are so close to paying it off. It should only cost $2-3k to replace your motor. That would be an easier pill to swallow than coming up with the money for a down payment and another car payment for the next 3-5 years. Nobody will give you anything for a trade with a bad motor.
Definitely look around for a reliable, honest mechanic. Its too bad you aren't in my area, I'd send you to my guy. He's never tried to get me to repair anything that didn't need to be fixed.

Sorry for the super late posts been soo busy with the holidays and all ! I ended up just leasing a Altima for now ... I finished paying the mountaineer now looking to sell what would be a reasonable offer for it I've had several people offer 2000 but I feel like that's a low offer :/ or am I totally off base here .. And idk if this is a stupid question but would mileage matter if it needs a new engine or how does miles work lol ?
