What is with the rear window defogger on these vehicles ?!!??

I've fixed the grid lines in mine so many times, I have to believe it is a defect somehow?

They are so fragile, that simply by cleaning the window with diluted class cleaner and a paper towel, the lines break and little pieces fall off. They leave a "trace" of where they were, but little pieces/flecks come off. Just touching them with meter leads will cause a 1/16 to 1/4 inch to fall off in some cases.

I suspect defective conductive lines. It appears as though the "adhesive" layer of the lines stays intact, but the "conductive" layer is the part that flakes/falls off.

I used one of those $16 repair kits and it seems to fix the issue, but then then another line goes bad a month later. They're all working for now, but the slightest bit of disturbance on the inside of the window and they break again.

Anyone got a source for just the conductive repair glue? I don't need the rest of the kit.

Any means of "sealing" these over with some kind of clear, non-distorting sealant?

$500 deductible on my ins.

Thoughts?

When I bought mine, the plastic pieces that house the wiring were hanging there, so I have no defroster, but a perfectly fine window otherwise. Glued the plastic things back on, but it really sucks not having a rear defrost. Is there any aftermarket solution out there? Until I justify spending $250+ just for a new window.

Checl RCFlyers post above. See the link. About $45. Make sure you have power at the terminals before investing.

About 2/3 down the page. Look for "Stick Kits". Size appropriately for your window.

You are a hero, my friend. Not only am I gonna have a working rear defroster, but I'm also gonna add a defroster right where my wipers park to keep them ice-free. Been looking/hoping someone would sell some kind of aftermarket defroster like this and I could never find it.

We had a Lincoln LS years ago that had the defroster strips for the wipers, nicest feature ever on a car, honestly can't believe it's not more common. I'd take that over auto anything else! Lol

I made my own 3 inch high front windshield grid which ran full width and pulled about 20 amps on my old 1993 pontiac back when I was an avid skier and often drove hours in snow to get to the slopes. This was wonderful because I like to keep car interior fairly cool, and didn't need to run defroster on HOT to keep wipers semi clear
