Hi do you recommend 10" or 12" inch subs and why?

Thanks

I like the sealed sound of a 12". Hits good, nice and tight, very accurate for all types of music....but that all depends on what kind of sub too.

I agree, 12's really aren't that much better, they just drop a little lower and a little louder.

I have three 10" MTX 6000's in a sealed box with over 700 watts running to them, love em, they are extremely tight sounding, very cear, loud, and drop hard as hell. If I had three 12's, it would be a little louder but would sound more "boomy".

I'm gonna go with what they are saying.

I have 4 12"s in the back of my EX, and yeah let me tell you they hit ridiculously loud, and all is well. But it's missing the tight punch that 10's give. While 12"s are great for putting out some major sound. The 12's are great for like rap/r&b stuff like that, that was made to actually feel/showoff the bass. When you listen to punk, or alternative, the bass gets a little I dunno sloppy. It's not really noticeable unless you're into speakers, and such, I would say, and you really know the difference.

So, here we go 12's are great for blowing up the place with boom, and 10's are for a tighter, more clean sound, through all types of diff music.

There are times I wish I would of gotten 10's instead. But when I go down to the local hangout, where all the cool kids blast their systems for bragging rights, I'm glad I have my 4 12's, puts them all to shame.

im about to purchase some audiobahn subs. the alum12q's to be exact. ill probably get three of those, which put out 1000 watts RMS. they have an efficiency of 96.4 dbs while the 10s put out 800watts RMS and have an efficiency of 95.4dbs. the frequency response for the 12s are 18-500Hz, while the 10s are 20-500Hz. i dont know if im reading that correctly, but wouldnt that make the 12's better in most categories?

go with the biggest possible sub you can fit. Depending on your what you want either it being SQ or SPL or a Mix will decide how big the box will be and what its tuned to. My personal preference is for 15's and 18's. They can sound just as "tight" as a 10, and are being used more and more in SQ oriented competitions.

Ok..definitely have to disagree with Bruce on that one...a 15 or 18 cannot sound anywhere nearly as "tight" as a 10. First off they push more air than a 10 and therefor have a higher amount of THD...Total Harmonic Distortion...this prevents these subs from playing "tight" bass like a 10. Also, a 15 or 18 is completely different than a 10. There is vitually no similarities in the frequency response and roll off...some comanies might claim their 10 can play at really low frequencies...but in a real bandwidth situation it wont even come close. My advice to cbr600rr...dope motorcycle by the way...would be to get a 10 or two...throw it in a vented box tuned to 40 o even as high as 50 hz. This will produce fairly "tight" and accurate bass, and sub wil perform well at low frequencies with a long and low roll off similar to a 12. An keep in mind efficiency is by no means a way to determine if one sub is "louder" than another. I could take an $80 10" sub and make it hit as had as a $250 12" sub in the rght application. A lot of peoplein this forumn love the Audiobahns for some reason...not bad subs at all...but they arent aything to die for...if you want solid bass with series SQ...go with something like JL, MB Quart...or you could even try out the new Planet Audio Zetar series 10's...they pound soooo hard. Or, if you got the cash...Adire makes a dope sub, best I have heard.

sure...

well Bruce...if you have something to say then say it..and if you disagree back it up with some support..let me just say this...im a youngblood as far as ae goes...only 18...nut have been in this so called "game" since 14 and have a cornicopia of knowlede if yu will...I have turned down job offers from several stores..Car Toys, Best Buy, and Magnolia Hi Fi...only because I would not degrade myself totheir reputations as being worthless brchure memorizing retail sellers...I plan on graduating this year and attending the Installers Institute down in AZ and then going to a University to further my knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering...and at the same time starting up my own business...if you still dont trust/believe me...this summer I will prove my last post correct by giving you a 15" and a 10" sub both in similar enclosures and powered off the same amp...mark my word...come July you will have two new systems...and you will fnd yourself selling the 15 because you WILL like the 10 better.

Don't sweat it, lynchin. Age doesn't matter when you provide facts. Brucewayne is obviously a young basshead (maybe younger than you) that apparently only cares about boom and not overall sound quality. You certainly don't have to justify yourself.

ill dont have anything to prove to a "youngin" nor anybody that thinks the epitome of SQ drivers is MB Quartz. Check out resonant engineering, beyond audio, elemental design, digital design, and see what a real driver is.

lynchintha93x, your know ur stuff with speakers!

how did you learn it all, ive been messin with audio stuff when i was about 8 years old and im 15 now and i dont know half the stuff you stated there.

i got my 10" speakers (2) for $14 canadian, they were used, but id still say best choice ive ever made in my life for sound stuff, considering i got my amp for free which is 85 watts (the fisher 201 futura series lol like 1980 orr somethin manufacture date). Also perfectly matches my computer system and stuff. I also use it in my truck, with a computer back up to power the amp and its more then enough bass. :D :D

id say 10" are good

I have 2 JL 12W3s with a 500 watt JL amp (mono channel). Its loud enough and pleases me most of the time. I'm just getting really into all this so I'm not always sure exactly how things should sound, so sometimes I wonder if these subs are producing sounds as accurately as I would like. I'm more into sound quality than knocking things off the wall, but if it sounds so good, of course you're gonna turn it up!!!!

If theres anyone on the board local maybe you can meet up and listen to their system. I wish I would have had that option, but overall I'm happy with my choice.

If you are just going to put in 2 subs, I would go with 10". I originally had 10"s in my car until they got stolen. I thought 12"s would be better, but I was wrong. Don't cheap out either, I had MTX which were really good. PG is good too. If you want to spend some more coin, go with the Kicker SB. Ultimately, if you are doing a huge system, you want something like 2 8"s, 2 10"s, and a 12", or 2 12"s and a 15" so you get all the advantages of each.

Brandons: If you really want to get to know your stuff go pick up a book called the the Car Stereo Cookbook...its availabl at all libraries...probably the best out there...thats where I started...now I attend monthly workshops and hang out at a very very well known outfit called Innovative Audio...they are a premiere install/retail company serving only the finest products available and do installs for guys like Jay Buhner, Gary Payton etc. I have also been doin installs on my own for two years. You just have to take the initiative to learn, and its fun, working in this field has also helped me in my school classes like math, chem, physics, and into to calculus...and it can be applied in a lot o different uses.

i would go with 12's, i'm running 2 12inch kaptions in a ported box running off of a 600 watt kenwood amp.
they can really put out bass. my side mirrors even vibrate.
you can't even stand behind the subs if there turned up loud or you get a headache like right away. so i have a switch in my remote wire off the deck so i can shut the amp off when i don't want all the bass. i also run the factory 6.5 inch jbl. The deck i have is a 180 watt kenwood, but soon to be replaced by a pioneer with 3d graphics and remote.
