- 1997 Exp. XLT
I've owned a 1997 Explorer XLT (6 SHO) since new and it has delivered dependable performance except for two annoying problems which various Ford garages don't seem to be able to correct during or after the warranty.
The first problem is when idling the idle slows down to 500 rpm or less and almost kills (but never does) and I hear mulitple clicking noises like the a/c valves clicking on and off. It seems worse during warm weather. The second problem is when I stop and try to quickly accerlate there is a split second hesitation then it kicks in and accelrates just fine. This has been a good vehicle with 95k and I'm thinking about buying a 2005 or newer Explorer but I don't want to deal with these problems.
