So, I've got 121,000 miles on the explorer (bought used with 94,000) and every long trip I'm worrying about the engine, the tranny, will the 4x4 engage, etc. The good news is the explorer always performs flawlessly. The bad is that I've heard so many issues concerning transmissions, leaking 4.0 ohv, and such. Anyone out there want to dispel the rumors and/or give my a heads up on keeping my explorer running smooth. I would like to get a 150,000 trouble-free miles out of it. Thanks.

best thing to keep your engine running is always change your oil. For the transmission just drive your X right and it'll hold up. Dont go into drive when your rolling back like some of my friends do. Thats just asking for trouble. My old bronco had 250k when I sold it or my X and I always changed my oil and had no engine problems at all. Stuff like good driving will also increase the life of your truck. Stuff like don't floor it when the light turns green. Stuff like that

I'm at 118,000 and still running very well, no problems at all.

Good Luck.

Try adding synthetic fluids to your truck. supposedly they help in the cold weather and increase your mpg, and they can last MUCH longer than regular fluids. Also a good tip is to do regular maintenance. Keep everything in good working order.

:) I bought mine with 80,000 miles on it, and it just turned over to 133,000 miles.
I always change my oil @ filter every 3 to 5000 miles since I've
owned it. Runs great. No problems.

We bought our 1992 XLT 4x4 (with auto tranny) at about 140k miles.. The first tranny finally died about $165k miles.. the 2nd died at 236xxx miles.. but that was caused by overheading the motor (lost the waterpump and it got hot.. I didn't know it until I "smelled" that it was hot)..

We are now at 246xxx miles.. on the 3rd tranny, 1st motor.. (2nd set of heads).. but in general it is very reliable.. but we plan to replace the motor at 300k wether it needs it or not.. (for us.. that is just over 1 year away).. We aren't exactly "nice" to ours.. but I change the oil every 8k miles (mobile 1 synthetic).. and try to keep things lubed/tight as much as possible (6 miles of washboard dirt road every day at 45mph knocks things lose).

They can last a long time if you take care of them..

I just turned 148,000 on mine. I've replaced the usual items one would expect, but so far she's never left me stranded and continues to run and drive well. I have no plans to sell it or trade it. Keep up on the maintanence items and yours will last a good long time.
