Well I did it. After driving around to 3 different auto parts stores I finally found the Mobile 1 15K oil. It was not too bad $36 per case I got it for $18 because they have a coupon in there calendar buy 3 get 3 free. Any way the only thing I did not like was that it only comes in 15-50. I have herd from a few people that Ford used 5-20 because it is thinner and saves on gas. Also I have that synthetic dos not change thickness from temp change.

Hope the X gets better MPG with it in there I have always used dino juice. It seams to run smoother. i am driving to boston next week (600 miles) i guess i will see how it does.

You can get a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w-30 from walmart for $20-23.

yeah but i got 6 quorts for $18

Of 15w-50. Explorers call for 5-w30

It's not recommended to use 5w20 in an SOHC motor.

maybe that my problem with the rattle on start up i use 10-40 ?

I am convinced that Ford uses thin oil to improve MPG. If it blows up i guess i will know why. But just food for thought the 2005 mustang has the same engen in it any one know what the 05 mustang is calling for in terms of oil?

I would guess they call for 5w-20 in the new mustangs. Ford uses that weight for many of their ohc vehicles like the new f-150 and the lincoln continental.
As for the engine blowing because you use 5w-30 oil, I wouldn't lose any sleep over that fear.

The 4.0 SOHC and diesel engines are the only engines that don't use 5w20. Fuel economy was one of the reasons for switching to 5w20 motor oil, but the main reason was because of tighter tolerences the newer engines. The SOHC uses 5w30 because of the timing chain design. The Lincoln LS 3.9 was also using 5w30, but I'm not sure if it still does.

So do you think that i will screw up the timming chain?

The main reason 5W-20 was specified for your engine is to increase the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) reported to the Federal Government. CAFE is the combined average fuel economy of all of a vehicle manufacturers product line. Minimum CAFE levels are specified by the Federal Government. In order for a vehicle manufacturer to continue selling profitable large trucks and SUV's, which typically have poor fuel mileage ratings, as compared to smaller cars, and still meet mandated CAFE requirements, they must also sell enough of the smaller cars which have much better fuel economy ratings to offset the poor fuel economy ratings of the larger vehicles. For model year 2001, the change to a 5W-20 oil will allow Ford and Honda's overall CAFE to increase by a very small amount, typically in the tenths of a mile per gallon range. 5W-20 oil is a lighter viscosity than a 5W-30 oil and therefore has less internal engine frictional losses, or less drag on the crankshaft, pistons and valvetrain, which in turn promotes increased fuel economy. This increased fuel economy is virtually undetectable to the average motorist without the use of specialized engine monitoring and testing equipment under strictly controlled test track driving when compared to a 5W-30, 10W-30 or a 0W-30 viscosity motor oil.

My question for you guys as a novice if you can help is I was told that unless your burning oil, that oil designed for older cars over 75,000 miles is a waste of money. What is the opinion of the folks here?

I've used it, and its not that expensive. I think its basically just a thicker oil with some additives in there to help seals.

On another note, I've picked up some 10W-30 15K mile oil from walley world in the 5 qt jug. What I plan on doing is running if for 5K and having it tested thru Al's lab that he used. Depending on the results, changing the filter every 4K and having it tested every 2500-3K.

I wouldn't run 15-50 in anything but a race style motor. I also wouldn't run Fords crappy 5-20. Like FL Oil Guy posted it's just about upping their fleet mpg. 5-30, and 10-30 would be then only things I would run in the Explorers. How much is an oil analysis? Seems like it'd be cheaper just to drain and refill.

its $20 bucks I think, which is basically a jug of mobil one but I'm curious as to how this stuff holds up.

Pretty damn well. My X loves it. ALthough I won't be able to do any long term research on it because I'm swithching to the Extended Performance for my next change. Only four more bucks a jug for it at Meglo-Mart.

Yeah, i've got the 15.000 mile stuff in mine, and it likes it a lot, it seems to me like it's running better. And I don't think $20 is that bad for analysis, it might cost you $20 now, but it if you see that it will hold up for 15k miles, it will save you money in the long run, becuase you won't be changing it as often in the future.

i just picked up some 10-30 mob1 to replace my 5-30 mob1..about to change it now.

Exactly what I just starting running, so far so good I guess, I ran mobil one before and haven't noticed to much of a difference. I haven't reallly listened/intrigued yet tho either. I have the 10W-30, I figured if it does hold up that long, it will be in there for the summer as well. If the anaylsis turns out it isn't hold up it will be the last time I buy the extended stuff, I'll just stick with the reg. mobil one.

I still have the old Mobil in there. But my engine doesn't like 5W-30. Uses a little too much for my taste. with 10W it doesn't use much at all.
