OK guys... I have picked up a 90 Ranger to drive as a daily driver... when I got it the head gasket was shot... no compression in 1 and 2. Upon removal and having the head checked, the head turned out to have several small cracks. After looking for a replacement head, I found an entire 2.3 dual plug from a stang to swap with the ranger motor. Luckily I pulled it... the oil pick up tube was filled full of silicon someone used as a gasket prior to me owning the truck to fix the oil pan gasket. Fast forward two long years of me being LAZY... lol

I get the stang motor installed after I replace the essentials... gaskets (except for the head gasket), seals, water pump, oil pump, and clutch. Get the truck installed, and the fuel pump was shot... (gas left in tank.) I swap the pump and drain the tank. Got it started and the fuel injectors seemed to be clogged as well. I swapped with another set that I had from the stang motor. Got the truck running decent finally. I changed the fuel filter as well.

I drove the truck several days and began to notice that it was running rich at idle and when I stop by getting the nice spell of gas. I began checking the obvious things... IAT sensor, ACT sensor, swapped out the extra set of coil packs. the CE light had began to come on and I pulled the codes... gave me some EGR flow code, DIS failure and another that did not make sense... (forgot already.. :() I then swapped out the TFI module (ignition module) out with the spare one I had from the other motor. STill not luck. Engine has a slight rough idle. I did measure the compression...
1 - ~170
2 - ~150
3 - ~100
4 - ~170

From this... I see a possible problem with the head gasket or possible leaky valve. Though I pulled the plugs beside it but did not see any of the pressure would leak off... well it held good. I have also swapped with another MAF to rule that out. In my testing... I have pulled the fuel injector plugs for cyl 2 and 3 witht little to no change in idle. Not sure what is going on... not ready to give into a head gasket issue or worse with the head. I plan to pull the valve cover and remove the rocker for cyl 3 and pressurize the cyl to see if I can notice any pressure leaking off.

I have done alot of reading and read that several have pointed to a bad DPFE sensor... some have back grounds or a few intermittant connections. I would like to get a better idea of specifics of what others have tested and found to be the cause or fix for an issue similar to mine. I am just not sold on the idea that the low compression on 3 is causing my problem... the coils seem to fire just fine when I check them with an extra plug. The plug in 3 does seem to be a bit richer than others... almost like it has either missed a few sparks or not enough spark. I have thought about the EEC giving some intermittent problems but still not had a chance to troubleshoot the EEC.

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated. sorry for such a long first post...

thanks

Brian

Wow, you're over MY head.

Here's a bump for ya, hopefully someone with knowledge of the 2.3 will see this and respond.

Oh, and welcome to the site.
