Hey, I just picked up a 1991 Explorer XLT auto for 1000 dollars. The truck is in alright shape, has 177xxx km on it and drives pretty smoothly. however, the transmission sometimes slips when going around 65 kmph. it is slight increase in the RPMS and then it keeps driving smoothly. Also clunks a little going into reverse. any ideas as to what i could do?

there are others here that can offer better advice about it but from my experiance with mine ....reverse was delayed and when it did go into gear it gave a good clunk...od was hard to get into ,had to get up to 45-50 mph and then shift from drive to neutral then back into drive to get into od ...but no slipping. after the rebuild i was told that the shift solinoids that are located right next to the cat receive alot of heat so one or 2 had failed (can't remember) .the pump section was still good so i was able to have a basic rebuild but they also told me that other parts had failed and if it had been drove much longer then it would not be fixable.

brooklnbay can give you a better idea of what may be happening with yours but if i was to guess .....like with many al4ld transmissions is that its time to get it rebuilt ,had mine done at 189k so it's about time i bet .

hope this helps

sorry to say that it sounds like the trans needs rebuilt. i just went thru what ur talking about only a little worse. I picked mine up for $2000 and didnt know what i was getting into. but my trans was having issues shifting through the gears too. im not an expert but it sounds similar. mine has 260,000 miles though.

Ok, well I dropped the pan, had a look around, changed the filter and gasket (slight metallic shards in the filter, not alot though) changed the transmission fluid. I also flushed the PS pump and filled that up just because it was burnt and low from being in storage. It ran a little better, but still hesitated a bit. I cleaned the MAF and now everything seems better.

thats what mine did when the transmission was going it eventually got worse until i lost od, reverse and first. i drove it for about 6 months before i lost the tranny. lol i bought a reman for 1200 with a 1 yr 12000 mile warranty from phoenixhardparts.com. i changed all the fluid, screens, and flushed mine, and it drove good for a short time then it went fairly fast when it started acting up again.

If you're torque converted is locked in OD when going around 65 and you let off the gas, when you step back on the gas the engine will rev up a bit before the torque converter locks into OD again. This is normal.
Not sure if that's the case in your situation and you think it's slipping cause you see the rpm's rev up for a few seconds.

my transmission will stay locked in od when i let off the gas, and will still be locked when i hit the gas again. what could this problem be? if i kickdown in overdrive it jerks really hard

if the torque converter isn't unlocking properly, that's an issue, perhaps brooklyn bay can chip in - he's been around 1 or 2 or these tranny's.
