Hello I have a problem with my Explorer overheating.
I Let it sit for about 1 year while i was working on the paint and interior.
I would star it up and let it run for about 10minutes and didnt notice it overheating. But now today i took it for a drive and noticed the temp started to go up.
I would then put in park and the temp would go to about half way mabey alittle more but if i give gas alittle the temp go's down some what then if i let up the gas it go's back up.
If i leave it in park and just let it run it does not seem to overheat.
Anyone know what I need to fix.

Thanks

Sound like either a thermostat or fan clutch.

I just had a similar problem on my '97. Temp would rise above normal and fluctuate in the high range. I replaced the thermostat and it took care of the problem. If you're not having any other problems other than the overheat, I'd go with the thermostat. Quick, easy and fairly cheap.

is it full of coolant? and is the coolant up to par? meaning enough anti-freeze in it or too much anti-freeze in it? maybe its time for a flush and a new thermostat.

Well I changed the termastat today and it still does the same problem.
Someone told me to check the fan clucth by starting the engine then shut it off and the fan should stop right away.I did this and it stop right away so I am thinking it is the Water pump.
I am thinking it is that becouse when in park and i rev the engine the temp will go down ten when i let up on the gas it statrs to go back up.
So mabey when i rev it the pump spins faster and moves more water only thing that keeps me wounding it not that is even when driveing at 35mph it gets hot not real hot about half mabey alittle more.

Anyone think it might be the water pump.

Thanks Everyone for the help

At 35 mph, you're getting a pretty good bit of air being forced through the radiator so, if it's getting hot at that speed, you can probably rule out (for now) the fan/fan clutch. If it gets hotter as you increase your speed, I'd check for a clogged radiator. Crossflow radiators don't tend to clog as badly or as easily as the old downflow radiators, but they can still get a bunch of buildup and crud settling in the bottom and also blocking some of the tubes. Loosen the cap and then open the drain petcock on the radiator and see if the coolant flows out at a good rate. If it dribbles out, you can be pretty certain that you have a clogged radiator. Even if it flows out OK, after sitting that long, it probably wouldn't hurt to flush the thing out.

Good luck.

Ok thanks I will try that Frist but I think it might be the Water pump I opened the radiator cap And noticed the water in the radiator didnt move (or seem to Flow)So I tought the termastat might not have opened so i let it run for a while and still it didnt seem to flow.

Thanks
