I have a 1992 Ford Explorer that only overheats with the A/C running. I had the A/C serviced about one month ago and before that, the car would overheat without the A/C running. I've replaced the thermostat, water pump, fan clutch, fan blade, put the fan shroud back on, but the temperature gauge still goes past halfway ONLY when the A/C is running though. If the A/C is not running, the car runs fine. Any suggestions?

It's common in every vehicle for the engine temp to go up with the AC running. It's just that much more of a load on your engine running the compressor.

Rather than just doing a manual rad flush at home with a garden hose,,,try taking it to a shop and having a power flush done. It might drop the temp a little more,,, but it will still run hotter with your AC on,,regardless.

Ok, but should it run a lot hotter with the A/C on? I notice the needle on the temp gauge going to about three quarters with the A/C on and it keeps going up slowly.

If your on a budget, and have spare time, check out my How To in my signature. Worked for me like a charm. Sounds like you've tried everything else just about. I run my A/C on a 100* day now and never get past R (1/2 way). I used to couldn't use A/C at all, it would try to put it in the red, even on a cool 60* day. ( I know because I tested it, didn't need A/C in 60* weather )

Your compressor could be bad.. A bad compressor can cause it to overheat. If you put the system on defrost does it also overheat?

But if the compressor is bad, wouldn't the ac not be blowing cold air? My A/C does blow cold air while it runs.

Depends on whats shot in the compressor.

With your AC off. Start your truck and turn the defrost on and listen to the compressor. You should hear the clutch kicking in and out. If it doesn`t,,,chances are your compressor is shot.
