1992 Ranger. 4x4 not working.

i recently bought a 92 ranger with the 4.0 in it. the 4x4 didnt work when i bought it but living in iowa it would be really nice to have! when i push the button the light will only come on some of the time and i never hear the click like its supposed to. it has the auto locking hubs. anything helps thanks

Possible the shift motor, after all it is 20 years old. BUT first check all of the wiring connectors, including the one at the 4x4 module. Connection/corrosion issues are the most common problems.
