Ok...well to start out its a 1992 Xplorer xlt with 166600 miles. I bought it Dec, 2011. ($700) Since ive owned it there has been lifter tick and the ocasional drop in oil pressure. first oil change there was 1/8th iinch of slug on the drain plug and had to usea screwdriver to unblock clogs. Its mainly kept as my in town dd. Just today the rear freeze plug on the head of the passenger side sprung a leak. Burns occasianl oil on start up and its getting a little tired imo. Question i have is what would it be wiser to buy a reman engine or fix the bad on this engine. Just looking for others opinons on the matter.
Thanks,
Adam

I would try to gauge health by a compression test and check for the presence of aftermarket cylinder heads. If compression is good and heads have been replaced (factory castings are a weak spot, go new aftermarket), you could try de-sludging the motor. Many methods are available like temporarily running ATF or kerosene instead of oil. Your mileage may vary so research your options first and know the risks involved.

A junkyard 4.0 may be a good option if your existing motor was trashed by previous owner neglect.
