1993 ford explorer
My explorer I just acquired is a 1993 2 door sport. It only has 33,000 miles on it and that is the correct mileage I got it from the original owner who was a elderly fella who only used it to tow behind there rv during his retirement. It sat since 2000. Still had original firestones on it. It has factory lock outs and manuel transfer case and the worst 3.27 ratio I will add it is a California emissions vehicle what difference it is idk. After new fuel pump all filters brake calipers and some other seized up parts From sitting it actually runs like brand new now seems to have decent power for the 3.27s now finally to my question. I was looking at a 1995 explorer today and the intake setup seems the same. Is the second gen intake the same? If so k@n makes a full kit for 1995 and up. Why won't k@ns kit work on first Gen explorers. I want to try and get as much power out of it with bolt ons befor I thing about gear swap.

'95 Explorer battery is on the driver's side of the truck -- so the 2nd gen air kits probably won't fit. Anyway at $290 I'm not willing to be a guinea pig :)

The K&N FIPK for 95-01 Explorers runs right behind the passenger side headlight and that's right where our battery is.

What I run is an AMSOIL dry filter on the end of the OEM air tube and Granitelli MAF housing. It works great. I wouldn't mind a little cooler air going into it though, but I'd almost have to relocate the battery to do that.

I used to run a K&N drop-in oiled filter, a long time ago. I don't know if K&N still makes that or not. That would be if you kept the factory airbox.

Maybe the Ex is different, but my 93 ranger 4.0 has a flat panel filter, not a conical like gen 2's.
If your Ex has a flat panel too, you could adapt it over to a conical, unless you're in the great state of CA where they do a visual check of that for smog check.
I have a K&N flat filter that I bought last century, but I don't know if they still even make them.

I didn't even reliZe the batteriy being in a different location just wasn't looking at it lol and luckly im in Virginia and no California. I was looking at the Gibson exhaust systems too but now one makes any for us 2 door sport guys. Which Dosent make sense it is a SPORT haha. My wife drives a 1993 4 door it has 3.73s and I like the pull it has. But I also like the low rpm at cruise speed in OD at 55 im only at 1500 rpm I just need to work on getting it to pull. Have any of you guys used the jet or hypertech chips in there 1st gens?

Both those chips were popular with board users back ten or more years ago when everyone had 1st Gens. If you run some searches you should find tons of threads on them.

So which style air filter does your Sport have? Flat or cone?

James Duff still sells some sort of chip for us, and maybe on eBay you could find something. Regear is your best ticket for pull in my opinion.

I had one of those flat K&N's, not quite in the last century but close. I still have one of those conical S&B PowerStack filters. Remember those? They were popular here on EF back then too, like the Hypertech, Jet, and Apten chips were.

@Rick has/had a Hypertech chip in his Pumpkin...

My $.02....Save your $. Use the standard paper filter. Go to an exhaust shop & just get a dynomax muffler & have them run some pipe. Forget any chip, not worth the cost & you really need a way to tune to see any major gains. 1st gens are OBD1.
You would notice the best power increase switching to 3.73's. But installing them in the front Dana35 is a lot of work.
