Quick question, I replaced the ECT in the engine recently when I did the LIM.

However, upon startups in the morning, the needle on the temp gauge takes 10+ minutes of idle to reach anywhere near the middle of the gauge, but the heater core hoses are hot long before, cab reach temps where I can't touch them for more than a second or two.

This gauge isn't controlled by the ECT sensor, is it?

There's a little gauge sensor with 1 wire going to it next to the thermostat.

Nope. . ECT is the 2 wire temp sensor in the lower intake. The gauge is run by the 1 wire temp sensor in the lower intake.

So if this gauge reads a little slow, not that big a deal, right?

In most cases. But you may see a mileage drop & you may not know if your overheating if it happens

Well, I believe it's working as when driving, the needle gets to abd stays around the "R" in NORMAL. it just takes a while to get moving.

I don't know what the gauge range is. If it's 180-210 then I'd say it's fine as it would take a few minutes for the engine coolant to warm to that level, but if the gauge range is 100-250, then something is wrong as it should take about 30 seconds to warm to 100 as hot as it's been here.

When I leave work I will try abd time how long it takes to get into the "normal" zone.

Apples to oranges but my mazda3 gets to operating temp inside of 2 minutes at idle.

Your thermostat may be stuck open so it takes longer to get up to operating temp.

Not that this guarantees anything but the thermostat is brand new.
