I have a 94 ford explorer. it is 4x4 and if i fill up im only getting like 200 miles with 3/4 of a tank. i never fill up 2 times because im 16 and cannot afford it but each time i do fill up it doesnt get much better then that. But my check engine light comes on while im driving and then shuts off and last week i had it happen 3 times in 20 minutes . i try taking it to autozone and the light never stays on long enough for me to get the codes checked. i have been doing a bunch of looking around online to see what could cause this. i only have 30" tires on it. brand new spark plugs and plug wires on it. I have read something about the mass air flow sensor?? If anybody has had this problem or knows what could be causing this please let me know ASAP! this is my daily driver and i cannot afford the gas anymore!

How many gallons is that? Most of my fuel gauges have been somewhat inaccurate, so that it is hard to say that 3/4 tank on the gauge is the same as 0.75*20=15 gallons.

Is this because Autozone is unwilling to pull codes when the CEL is off? Your computer has a memory, and it will store whatever code triggered the CEL so you can retrieve the code even if the CEL isn't currently on. If you don't want to rely on Autozone to pull codes for you, read through the stickies in the EEC-IV forum for instructions on how to pull codes yourself with nothing more expensive than a paper clip.

I cannot ever be too sure when im at 1/4 of a tank because its not accurate . when i drive it almost drops down to the red but when im parked its at 1/4 tank. and when i went to autozone i had them check it and they said there wasnt any codes and whatever was wrong ended up fixing itself? But ill go try and pull the codes

I want to say 3/4 tank is ROUGHLY 12-14 gallons of gas. I say this because tonight I put in 6.7xx gallons and it brought my fuel gauge from halfway between 1/4 and the red to just a hair south of half a tank.

I had a full tank all city driving and had 255 miles on the tank of gas. This should translate to 16-17mpg city.

You are correct you should get better than 10-12 (my wife's v8 durango get 12 in town). There is MAF sensor cleaner <--this is the only type of chemical to ever be used on this item.

How dirty is the air filter?
Do you smell fuel coming out of the exhaust? There's a couple possible solutions for this.

I asked the above questions to see if I can potentially narrow down the CEL.

Even being 4wd you should get at least 15 in town so there is 3-5 mpg to be had.
