1994 Ranger will not go into 4WD.

My Ranger will not go in 4x4. The light on the button in the dash will come on and say it is on sometimes but you cant turn it off. And other times the light wont come on and you cant turn it on. There is no clicking but there is definately power to the button i took it off and put a tester on it. Any ideas of what to do??
