My wife and I have owned our 1994 Explorer since we purchased it off the lot. It currently has 164,000 miles on it. Questions is ----- I had a MAF replaced last year and since then it has knocked in overdrive when engine is under strain. It seems to be getting more constant lately with a mild rough idle when cold.

Any insight as to what the problem might be ?? I have tried tune ups, every known additive to man. Valve cleaners, etc.

Local FOrd delaer says carbon build up on the cylinders. Sounded like BS to me ...

HELP !!!

Thanks in advance !

I have a '94 and have had many problems with pinging as well. Even though I have followed the instructions in this link:

(Dead Link Removed)

and it hasn't solved my problems, you might want to check it out. Hopefully this will help you. Good luck!

Thanks dino ..... i'll give the bettery a try ..... it is more of an annoyance than anything ....

My '92 was exhibiting the same kind of pinging as you described. It started last year after doing some A/C work. In that process I had removed the air intake tube. The other day, after reading about the possibility of air leaks causing the engine to run lean and creating a ping, I checked the air intake tube, and found that I hadn't quite got it fully seated onto the MAF. After getting it properly attached, the ping went away.

Running lean .... hadn't thought of that ..... Now I have a couple of things I can check ....

Thanks for the info !!

Worn out O2 sensors can also cause a ping.

I never run 87 octane, it's ping city if I do. My solution has been to run 91 or 92 octane gas (at least mid grade which here is 89 or 90). My truck seems to have more power with the higher octane gas anyway. I don't think its all in my head either--I can feel quite a difference.

My truck pinged before I put on the aftermarket MAF and before I put the KKM on. So I don't think that is the culprit.
