daughter recently purchased 4wd Eddie Bauer explorer. After fixing many small irritating issues and her driving it for about 2 years now it seems the bkup lights are no longer working. By moving the shift lever around a bit the lights will actually come on but not stay on. I can't seem to find a separate switch for the lights on the trans and do not have a service manual. I have never had any experience with Ford products other than Mustangs. Mostly GM stuff. There seems to be a what i call a range sensor at the end of the shifter cable with a harness coming from it. Do those go bad and is the switch a part of that sensor? She has taken it to a few local so called mechanics before bringing it to dear old dad, me. I was shop mechanic for GM dealerships for years. thanks for help Ron

on most vehicles, the backup light switch is part of the neutral safety switch on the transmission.

Not sure about the range sensor, but check the bulb sockets out, mine where VERY corroded, and would cause intermittent flickering of the lights. you can even get new ones at Autozone for $10 or so in the Doorman HELP section.
