- 1995 Explorer XLT
Working through various issues on a 1995 Explorer XLT that I picked up after my Dad passed.
One of the issues was the headlight chime was not working -- and I wanted that chime to work (plan on hooking the fogs to the parking light circuit in future and want that chime working when I use the parking & fog as DRL's during daytime driving, i.e., I always forget to turn of the lights when I use them in the day for DRL).
Now on to the problem and the solution:
Symptoms:
Located as per picture below (single 3/4" sheet metal screw holds it in at the top, rotate a 1/4 turn to remove once screw has been taken out)
View below (pulled this photo off the web) is "looking towards" the outside latching area of the door from the inside of the door compartment.
There is an exceptional write-up on this for the 1995 Explorer by another poster here -- but I am unable to fine the post, will update this post when I come across that link.
My issue was the switch had actually snapped in the middle, so the lead was just hanging in the door cavity.
Anyway, removed and replaced.
RESULT:
Incidentally, this switch seems to be a ground switch -- single terminal, continuity when plunger depressed (i.e., door closed), switch open (plunger out) when door opened. I would never have guessed that this is somehow wired into the GEM and also related to the headlight on chime, yet here we are, with a fixed headlight chime.

Symptoms:
- No door ajar dash light or chime for driver door
- Headlight ON chime not working
- SECURITY system is working
- The driver side door switch pictured below

RESULT:
- Door ajar dash light and chime now works for driver side door
- SECURITY system works as before (how it was working before without this switch is a mystery to me)
- Headlights ON chime now works <<<<<< MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
