Hey everyone. I recently purchased a 1995 Ford Explorer with only 125,000 miles! I was so stoked to buy this car because of the low miles and I got a good deal on it. The bad boy started right up and got me where I needed to to. That's when a couple weeks later... I started to have issues when I would come to a complete stop and continue driving. It's only the first couple gears maybe first through second where you have to gently accelerate to engage the next gear. If you drive it normally in these low gears the car will just rev up and not go anywhere. I found a sweet spot where I can feel the car drive but it usually makes the guy behind me pissed because it takes a light pull them when the next gear engages I'll let off the gas pedal for 2 seconds then lightly gas up again until I get into the higher gears. On the highway I'm fine its just when I have to stop and go back into the lower gears. I'm not driving the car right now but I really want to fix it because it only has 125k miles and one owner! Please if anyone knows anything about this it would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you

I might start with a fluid change and new trans filter. Clean the magnet off and maybe even drain the torque converter too if you have a drain on yours. I did this on my truck when it started acting funny and it shifts like a new trans now. Don't power flush it, just drain it and refill.

Thanks for the advice I will try this as soon as I can. Do you think the torque converter could have gone bad? It doesn't have many miles for the year

No one has gone through this ?

Now you know why it's got low miles.

What does the fluid look like???

I am assuming this is an automatic which can freewheel if the fluid is low...I would look on the stick after it is warm and see the fluid level is good...Plus look at the fluids color and whether or not it is dirty when you wipe the dipstick...

Changing the fluid and filter is a great idea and unfortunately no 4.0 liter automatic had a drain plug on the torque convertor...If the fluid smells burned or is dirty the only easy way to change it is gradually by filling the transmission and draining the pan over time...

Sounds like a bad drum Band to me, or burnt out clutch plates.

You can attempt to adjust the bands, but most of the time this is futile, and a rebuild is in order.

Search the Transmission section for the procedure to tighten the bands. Best of luck to you!
