1995 ford explorer
Hey all, I'm new here to these forums, as a matter of fact I'm new to the explorer world since I just bought my first car, 1995 ford explorer. I bought it knowing it had the check engine light on, mechanic said it was no big deal, anyways I picked the car up on a decent deal, however it won't pass smog and I just brought it for inspection to my mechanic and he said its the smog sensors, he wasn't too specific, and he said repairs are about $250 in total. Not exactly sure what to do at this point because although it may not seem like a lot, but to me it does. So I just wanted to hear any opinions of those out there who may know a thing or two about smog sensors about my particular car and if its worth the cost of repairs or if its something for me to be able to handle. I love learning and if its not overly complicated I wouldn't mind the possibility of doing it myself. So yeah any and all opinions are much appreciated. Thanks all!

It's really hard to make any comment based solely on "smog sensors." If you are interested in doing this sort of thing yourself, I'd start by pulling codes (we have a couple of sets of instructions for the EEC-IV self-tests using nothing more specialized that a paper clip). Once you have the code(s), then we will know which "smog" sensor he is talking about and further discuss how to diagnose and repair.
