Sup guys, my name is Joe and I have a 95 Ford Explorer 4.0 4x4. My Check Engine light has been on for a week or so, and was planning on getting codes pulled on Monday. Well, yesterday, turning left in an intersection, my truck died. I started it again, put it in Drive, and hit the gas, nothing. It was was acting like it was in Neutral. I lost R, D, 1 and 2. And right after I restarted, I got rear ended my an Expedition, luckily, it was nothing serious, and the guy helped me push the truck off the road. I got the truck towed to my house, and and going to drop the tranny out on monday and see whats wrong. But is pulling the tranny out necessary? Does anyone have any idea what this might be? Something small? Major?

thanks dudes
-Joe

Before you think about pulling the transmission..... let's get the codes. I am doubtful there is anything actually wrong with the transmission. But right now your symptoms are a little vague to do much other than make wild guesses. The codes may give us a clue where to start.

A wiring harness short could do something like this. Remember the computer needs input from the digital transmission range sensor to know what to tell the solenoids that cause the transmission to shift.

Ok.....Ill hold off on ripping out the tranny, lol. I found a guy here in Oceanside that will diagnose the problem for me for free....Ill see what he says on Monday. But in the meantime, should I expect something serious?

Important Notes...

The vehicle actually died 3 times on me when I was trying to restart it...

Check engine light has been on

I have NO Neutral, Reverse, First or Second gear. The Explorer is acting like its in neutral.

I do not hear any grinding in the tranny, It actually sounds normal.

And when I mash the gas in Drive, the truck slowly starts to move to a creep...

sounds like the direct clutches are burned?

it is within the internal transmission hang on let me get a diagram and i will show you!

Usually a forward clutch problem ONLY manifests itself in the forward gears and he is also lacking reverse. Also forward clutch problems usually give warnings.... though not always.

The fact your Explorer died, and only after that did you experience this problem is very strongly suggestive of some electrical fault. Forward clutch failure does not cause engines to quit.

Like I said before, I do not have enough information to make an intelligent guess on. Once we have codes we can go from there. I strongly doubt we are talking transmission internals here, and not the forward clutch.

Im starting to get my hopes up, thats not good! Im a college student, I cant afford a rebuilt/new tranny.......hopefully its something electrical

thanks for the help dudes
