1995 Limited 4x4

I just picked up a 95 Explorer Limited. This thing has air ride suspension and 4x4. Is this a true 4x4 or is it an all wheel drive model? My switch has a 4x4 and a 4x4 low position. I'm just wondering about that. when I put it in 4x4 high it worked great. 4x4 low gave me some clunking from the passenger side front but I was on pavement. I am guessing I need a new axle up front. Does anybody have any experience with this. One more question. since It's air ride I suppose lifting it is out of the question. I got a smoking deal and the interior is almost perfect.

It's true 4x4, not AWD. Before putting an axel in it, try the 4x4 low in some dirt or gravel and see if the clunking is still there. Dry pavement is not a good test.

It is true 4x4, but it is auto, only when it senses slippage when set in 4x4 auto- you're not going to be putting it in 4x4 and have 4x4 guaranteed all the time... You're running control-trac in the '95...

Thank you for the replies! I'm glad to know that it is 4wd and not all wheel drive. No particular reason. LOL. I drove the truck quite a bit yesterday and today. This thing seems to run really good.

The back doors seem to be permanently child proofed, I changed the child proof positions but the doors will not open from the inside. Has anybody experienced that issue before, it is not really a big deal.

The front over head interior lights do not work either, looks like I'm checking fuses and bulbs this weekend.

The door locks are not all working either. LOL. I love new projects!

The clunk you heard may also have been the transfercase switching between gears because most folks don't use 4low that it can be stubborn and make a clunk but even using it frequently it may do so. The door problem maybe within the handles them selves, I would take one of them out to see if it has a piece broken off, compare it with one from a door that works I've ran into broken ones before that caused the door not to open from the inside with the child locks off, its easy to do, just pop off the door panel and if I remember right its held on by 2 phillips head screws and the linkage is kind of just easily hooked on. For the 4auto you can do the brown wire mod, just type that in the search bar and you'll find directions its a way to manually control full power to the front axle.

Yup- the interior handles are sprung, especially if they don't sit completely flat when looking at them.

Before I replaced mine, they had to be pulled to the point if breaking off to get the door to open. Simple to replace- 10 minute job...
