1996 Key question

I have a 1996 XLT with security systerm, does the key have a chip in it? I only have one key and tried to get a copy and guy at hardware store claims it is chipped because it has a letter stamped on key. Everything I see online is that 1996 explorer does not have pats keys.

I have a 1996 XLT, the key has no chip. I have the security system, as well. As far as I know, they are metal keys with a plastic cover, no chip.

Definitely no PATS on a '96; none on my '97; don't believe PATS came to Explorer until 1999.

Actually, my mom's 98 has a chip, but I think that is the first year.
