I was wondering if anyone with 1996 or earlier 4.0 SOHC engines were experiencing the ticking noise upon start-up. I am, but in looking at the recall 01M01 I noticed that it did not apply to 96 0r earlier. Has anyone gotten Ford to cover their 96 or earlier? I have not gone to Ford with the issue yet. Thought I would get some feed back from people on the forum first then proceed. Thanks, Johnny

Yeah, I have a 91 and it does that...but i think jus cause its cold...cause after i drive it a couple miles it stops.

There is no SOHC in '96 and earlier Explorers. It started becoming an option in '97.

The 4.0 sohc came out in 97 not 96 as far as that noise I just had mine fixed on a recall. It is the timing chain, upon startup there is a little slack in the chain until the oil pressure builds up, I was told they put a check valve in to keep oil pressure on the chain at all times.

Thanks for the input on engine specs. I stand corrected, OHC in and SOHC out.

Anyone else with 96 or earlier with ticking problem or am I the lone ranger?

Also, Bandt 9299 do you have the recall number for the timing chain fix?

Just to clear things up a bit.

justwufn You have an Over Head Valve engine, not an Over Head Cam. (which would be the same as a Single Over Head Cam) We have one camshaft in the engine block, not one over each cylinder head. You might want to change your signature to reflect that.;)
