210 HP at 4600, 280 ft-lbs at 3200

I don't know of a perfect RPM. This is just my opinion, I'm sure others will let you know theirs!
Hope this helps,
Robb

Those aren't 1996 numbers. The 1996's have the 160HP OHV engines... I think they pump out 210 ft/lb of torque... I could be wrong, however.

Adam, in 96 you had the option of the 5.0. Those numbers sound right.

i thought it had a bit more torque? 288?

The OHV's torque is closer to 225...it's probably higher than that.

Per my 1997 Owner's Guide, the 5.0L V8 makes 211 HP @ 4600 RPM and has 274 ft/lbs at 3200 RPM. The '97 engine has the same specifications as the '96. In '98 Ford bumped the HP up to 215 HP @ 4200 RPM and the torque up to 288 ft/lbs at 3300 RPM. The '96-'97 Explorer V8s had the same ratings. The '98-'01 V8s shared the same ratings.

I recently bought my 96 Limited 5.0 but still have my 93 Eddie Bauer, which is rigged for towing my small travel trailer. Always been impressed with the 4.0's low torque curve of 2400 RPM. Seems I remember the 96 Ford F-150 5.0 liter torque curve was 2800 RPM, so I guess since the Explorer is a slightly lighter vehicle, Ford upped the torque curve to 3200 RPM. When it comes to pulling, useable torque is key. Torque pulls, not necessarily HP, as evidenced by a diesal engine's low torque curve of 1800 RPM. Thanks for the information! Mike

Hey, I'm looking for the torque and horsepower curve for a 5.0 Explorer too. Does someone have the chart and not just peak numbers?

TTT one more time.
