Hello, This is my first post to this site. I have a '96 Explorer XLT with a 4.0L engine. I want to check the band adjustments. It seems like there is a hesitation when the automatic shifts from 2nd to 3rd (RPMs increase).
The truck has 120,000 miles and is in great condition. I have have it for a year and know that it was dealer maintained.

First question: How do I determine the transmission type?
Second question: How do I do the band adjustments?
Third question: How do I identify the band adjustment screws?

Thanks guys.

Welcome to this forum! You have a 4R55E transmission. Check the sticky thread on the top of the transmission section on adjusting the bands. From what you're describing, it sounds more like a shift flare issue. There are sticky threads on that too. I've renamed the thread, and moved it to the proper section for you.

Brooklyn Bay, Thanks for the info! I found the adjustment procedures and will do it once I get an in./lb. torque wrench.

This is a follow-up to my original post. I know it's been a year but time was on my side for this problem. I tried to do the band adjustments but did not have the correct wrench to get to one of the adjustment nuts that was sort of blocked by a cable. Finally I got a crowfoot wrench but it cracked. Send it off to Mac Tools for a replacement. In the mean time I did change the fluid and filter and added some Lucas Transmission treatment. The problem I described continued but improved a bit. In April I started making a weekly trip of 225 highway miles and slowly but surely my original problem disappeared by July. The car is still shifting fine and now has 145,000 miles. I am glad I did not mess with the adjustments this time.
