hello people i am new here and i have a big problem..ok so i started hearing the famous noise from my exploers motor sounded like a lifter loose i tore the valve cover gasket off and i noticed a plastic peice laying next to my rocker arm further inspection i noticed i can see the timing chain guide is busted i looked it up on here and googled lots and its the left hand front cassette i looked around this great site and i see alot of pics of tear down but none of actually how to remove the cassette.anyways to me it looks like i can just do this with just the valve cover off but i dont see how or what to do to remove it.any help would be very appreciated..also i found a great diagram for the timing chain..heres the link...http://www.usallparts.com/catalog/p....html&XTCsid=57dd195e68dc985b99e010c925b17622

Must remove timing cover

You can't replace the left front timing chain without removing the front timing cover where the lower sprocket is. If you don't have the OTC-6488 timing tool set then it is more difficult to time the camshaft correctly. The following thread identifies a method with and without using the OTC-6488 but assumes the existing timing is correct.

SOHC V6 Timing Chain Inspection & Repair

Since your chain is broken your timing for the left camshaft is lost so you can't use the without OTC-6488 method.

the timing chain is fine its just the cassette the one in the head area it looks to me you can replace it with just the valve cover off

Lower guide bolt

Sorry, I misread your original post. Since only the guide is broken your timing is not lost so you can follow the alternate procedure that does not use the OTC-6488. However, you still need to remove the front timing cover to get access to the bolt that secures the lower section of the guide. See photo below originally posted by CDW6212R.

The green arrow identifies the guide upper bolt and the red arrow identifies the guide lower bolt.
