1997 Aerostar with a 4.0L. It hesitates when cold and in over drive.

Hello to all. This issue just started. Start the van up in the morning, travel down the side road at 30MPH and when I get to the OD gear, the van seems to hesitate, jerk back and forth. You can feel it, it only happens in OD and when the engine is cold. Once the engine warms up, it doesn't happen, no matter how much I try and duplicate the driving routine. I just finished replacing plug wires (from original) thinking this could be the problem. Read another thread that sounded a lot like this one. He replaced his coil and wire and resolved his issue.

Need a place to start and a plan of action. Could it be fuel related? Spark related? Transmission related? Transfer case related?

Do you have any code numbers like this: Pxxxx (substitute the x for a digit)?

I am going to have to take it in to autozone for a reading. For the longest time I have had a light and has been associated with gas vapor evap recirc. Every time I looked up a procedure to tech this out, it sounded like a wild goose chase. So the light has stayed on. As soon as I can confirm a code I will advise. If there is no code for this issue, does it point me in a specific direction?

It might be the DPFE sensor. Find out what the code number is before you replace any parts.
