1997 Aerostar XLT E4WD
Aquired summer 2015, plagued with P0171 (lean bank 1), always runs strong, even at 75 & 80
Replaced numerous vacuum hoses/fittings, new plugs and cables, removed and cleaned very dirty throttle body.

Replaced restricted fuel filter 5/2017: P0171 instantly went away!

6 to 7/30/2017: Drove from CO to CA (stayed in dreaded CA heat until latter July, then up the coastal states).
Starting in June, when the engine was cold, the thermostat would some times fail to open until getting way past the mid-point on the dash's gauge. After that, the temp was stabilized to normal (a bit to the right of mid-point).

8/1: Montana, and P0171 comes back.

Replaced thermostat:
Removed part was 195 degree, replaced with vendors generic brand @ 192 degree. Now the temp gauge runs well to the left of mid-point.
Later I checked with another vendor and they had a name brand 195 degree unit. Hmm!
------------------------------
8/15 Centech OBD2 scanner:
Stored Code: P0171
#4 listed possible cause = Faulty Bank 1 Sensor 1 Oxygen Sensor (Scanner's RED LIGHT is on for this)
Note: I only see two O2 sensors installed on this vehicle, preCat (upstream) and postCat (downstream).

Pending Code: P0304 - cyl 4 misfire detected
(Note: This is a distributorless engine, it has a coil pack.)

Freeze Frame:
ECT = 325 (?), ShTFT = -0.8%, LTFT = 13.3%
----------------------------
8/23 Replace upstream O2 sensor with Bosch 15717
----------------------------------
8/24 OBDLink MX Bluetooth scanner connected to a smart phone.
Freeze Frame DTC P0171
Fuel System 1: Closed Loop using O2 sensor
ECT = 190
ShTFT Bank 1 = 7.03%
LTFT Bank 1 = 3.91
RPM = 1,146

Oxygen Sensors Mode $05: data not available!

On Board Monitoring Mode $06:
Component Id $11 TID $41 - Manufacturer Defined
min = 63744
value = 438 RED
max = NA
units = NA
RED X
-------------------------------------
Your help will be appreciated!

My bet is on a bad intake manifold gasket causing the lean condition. It's not uncommon.
