1997 Explorer Sport. Transmission problems.

Glad to be aboard,visit this site almost daily for info wanted to join and hopefully share some info too. Right now I have a 97 explorer sport 4.0 ohv, the od light is flashing while driving, almost fills like a miss but could be tranny slipping. tranny fluid is grey. can this be rebuilt or better to get new one?

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the transmission section. The flashing O/D light indicates a code which is stored. Find out what the code number is.

If your transmission fluid is gray, you have major issues. I haven't been in Kindergarten for quite some time, so I don't remember what colors mix to make what, but trans fluid should be red, and if it's not red, your fluid has probably been contaminated in some way. As Brooklyn said, there should be a code stored, however Autozone scanners can not reach Ford transmission codes, so you will have to find someone with a higher level scanner that can access Ford transmission codes.

Gray not good...

When my transmission started flashing the O/D OFF light, I noticed the fluid was gray. Quite a bit of trouble after that.
