I am in the market for a Ranger truck and I found one in my area (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada) for a very small amount of cash. The truck is in pretty good overall shape but... The owner believes that his automatic transmission is fried! It's a 4.0L V6 with an automatic. I believe that it probably the 5R55E 5 speed auto but I am not certain.
The engine fires up beautifully and then you hear the whine from the tranny. The pitch changes as you accelerate the engine. It sort of sounds like the power steering pump connected to an amplifier. I was wondering, could this be an indication of the valve body needing a rebuild? Or, perhaps (I'm leaning toward this one because the fluid is quite dirty/black with particulate) the torque convertor has had an internal failure.
Any advice before I lay out the cash? I am fond of the Ranger platform. I used to own a '92 Aerostar and a Bronco II some years ago and although rust was an issue in both trucks, they worked well for me.
Thanx in advance.
