My speedometer and odometer seem to be not working all the time. They always work when I start the truck but seem to die after a couple miles. Once they die they don't come back until the vehicle is shut off and restarted.

Any suggestions on what to check first would be appreciated.

The link is electric from a sender in the transmission to the guage set in the IP. Since both are out, that suggests that the sender is bad.

If it were just one or the other not working Id say it was the gear that runs the mechanism in the dash.
Like I replaced here http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=247368

But since both stop working simultaneously it does seem like something electrical.

Maybe instead of the gear being broken, its the little electric motor that runs it?

What about the cruise control? if it correcponds to the speedo/odometer problem then it is probably the sensor in the transmission as bobflood suggested. If your cruise still works properly, then it's the speed signal sent from the ECM to the speedometer.(suspect loose/corroded connector).

5.0B2 - Good thought about the cruise control. I did not realize that the speedometer/odometer got it's signal via the ECM - thought it came directly from the trans.
