We have a 98 ford ranger 4x2 supercab. it has the 3.0l and an automatic with 3.73 gears with an open carrier. it has about 85k on it

lately it has been making very loud chirping noises... like a colony of crickets....

from things i have found on here, it seems to be related to the IAC. I want to get opinions of replace yes or no before i go and dump money on one....

it only makes the noise at idle, when i hit the gas, it goes away, but returns when i am coasting or stopped.

I went out to the truck and started it up, disconnected what i assumed to be the IAC and rpms dropped and the chirp went away, at this time it also had an irregular idle, more severe than fords tradmark burble....

wtf does "BUMP" mean???????

it adds a post to it and keeps it in the active threads
this is more necessary for un explorer related problems as most people do not browse the other less populated forums....

My 98 Ranger 4.0 had the herd of crickets too. I replaced the IAC valve an now its is quiet. It will get worse and interfere with the engine idle. $ 50-60 and 10 minutes, well worth the effort.

on my buddies a similar noise happened when his ac compressor clutch crapped itself. he has a 2000 3.0. it sounded like crickets, but only at idle. but if you disconnected the iac, and the noise went away, then it is most likely the iac. i wasnt even aware the newer 3.0's had the IAC valve on them. learn sometihng new every day.

well, his does have the iac
and it did sound like crap... my dad thought it was the a/c clutch too, but it cycles, and makes clicking sounds.... not the cricket chirping though......
