I was doing a new filter and gasket on my 1998 Sport SOHC Explorer when I had a hard time getting the pan down without removing part of the exhaust, the pan kept hitting one of the cats no matter how I tried to get it down. So I started removing the y pipe and of course I borke a bolt but it gave me enough play to remove the pan however now I can not seem to get it back up there. Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong. I did the same thing on my 2000 Explorer Sport and the pan came down fine. Thank You.

you could try to loosen your tranny mount and jack up the tranny a bit to give yourself some more room.

lol I can't believe I didn't think of that. Thank you. I feel like an idiot now.

Mine's a 4-door, but I found that when I did mine that I had to take the front driveshaft out and move it to the side....that gave me more than enough clearance.

Just my $.02....

I did that but it wouldn't clear the cat.

Thanks for all the replies, I just did a search which I should have done first. I guess the only way to remove the pan is to remove the exhaust, which I attempted and broke a bolt that i now have to fix, or raise the transmission which I believe is the easiest way.

I removed the driveshaft from the TC, and my pan came off easily. Done it 4 times now, but hopefully never again

Boy am I glad I have a 4door that doesn't require the removal of the DS or exhaust...

I'm jealous.....there wasn't enough clearance on mine to do it any other way....

Removal of drive shaft from Transfer case output shaft is a matter of removing 6 - 10mm bolts, and can be done in under 5 min
