1999 Explorer, auto 4wd. the 4x4 hi and 4x4 lo lights flashs on and off sometimes. and while im turning on dry pavement not in 4x4 It feels like it is binding up and then makes a loud clunk and frees up.This only happens when turning.Everything is fine when i'm going straight.I replaced a wheel bearing and cv axle with no different results. The binding and clunking is not normal 4x4 sounds.

Sounds like you're in 4WD when you're not supposed to be!

^Agreed^ It will fight with you when turning, that means your front hubs are grabbing.

he has a 99 so he's got the "live" axle, so if it feels like its grabbing then sounds like your t-case clutch is stuck which is making you stay in 4X4, try disconnecting the negative battery cable for bout 10 minutes or so and make sure your switch is on "auto" mode then see if the problem still persists.

I disconnected the battery and still no changes.I had a buddy look at my wheels when I was turning in a circle,he said it looks like it is the rear end that is binding up.Could that cause the symptoms i'm having? If it's binding in the rear could it affect the front end?

I thought I seen a couple threads on the same issue.
