1999 moutaineer 4x4 help

i got this 1999 moutaineer last nite and its stuck in 4 low when i start it both the 4 low and the 4 high lights blink when i turn the switch to take it out of 4 low nothing happens no lights come on or nothing but they both will blink now and then while its idleing the switch has a 4 low and a 4 high and auto i dont know what the auto means thanks for your help
