Hi,

I am new and I don't know exactly if this is the right froum to post it, but anyway:

I am looking into Explorers right now and my general question is, is it worth it to pay a little more to get the 97/98 with the new trans and what about the V6 ohv vs. ohc?
Is there a certain mileage I should be below? (found a 99 with 153kmls)

I found another one: 99 sport which doesn't shift into 1st gear anymore. The dealer said, it shifts up fine after 2nd, but not back into 1st.

any ideas? new trans or somehow else to fix?

I haven't driven it yet, but any ideas I should pay special attention to when I will?

thanks

Welcome to the site, if I were you I would definatley go with the sohc over the ohv, just due to more power, but thats just my personal opinion. I would definately stay away from the 99 that dosen't shift into first anymore, mine does this occasionally and I can't stand it  I bought mine with 125k on it and it now has 185 but still runs like a dream.

the one with the trans should go for 3500 though. I thought I just get a trans on the yunkyard or ebay and put that in then... And still made a good deal!

How many miles are on the 99 with the tranny problems?

70kmls

That dosen't sound like to bad of a deal, is it fully loaded or just a run of the mill sport? The tranny problem, does it do this all the time or just occassionally, my tranny went out & I got it replaced and now it does exaclty what the sport your looking at does, mine will usually only do this in the summer though when its warmer out, have you gotten a chance to drive it yet?

no, I haven't driven it yet, but I hopefully will be able to on Sat...

it is a sport, but it has leather interieur and some other features

As far as this, the only way is to replace the tranny, I don't know all really depends on what you think when you test drive it, but starting out in 2nd blows, trust me, unless like you said you plan on just replacing it. But let know after you test drive it ;)

Yeah, that's what I thought. I hope I can drive it on the weekend and I gotta talk to my trans-pro if he can help me dropping the old one and putting a new one in...

let you know, what happened

I still haven't driven it, but I called a Tranny shop. They would replace the trans for $1500 + tax. Is that a good deal? OR does anybody know somebody who does is for less?

And how do I figure out if it is the 5speed or the 4speed? Didn't they put in both till 99? Which one is the better one?

A lot of questions again... I appreciate any help with it
thanks

My expierence with this is with tranny shops you get what you pay for, I tried to find the cheapest shop and sure enough they "fixed" it - BS - I have had problems ever since, yeah that sounds about right, a pretty good deal as long as your sure its a reputable shop and they know what the hell there doing, you really really need to find out what kind of warranty there going to give you with the new tranny they might put in.
