1999 Ford Explorer Xlt
Hi all
Purchased a Explorer 1999 xlt, 190k on clock. Was a good price. But after bringing it home problems started to happen. Transmission was locked in limp mode no reverse, no neutral, no park all forward 3rd gear. Changed filters and oils as one does still no change. Noticed power supply was not best after changing radio with harness etc, done it with an old explorerso knew what to do. Found out the battery that was in it was 550cca when it should of been 750cca. Changed battery and alternator ( was on it's way out). Now with new battery. Back interior light stays on, noticed stud for back locks were both different one larger then other. Taped other one for now so door isn't loss. Light is still on. Checked fuses with fuse light checker over half didn't light up. Replaced fuses still nothing. Checked online for fuse layout, and some of the places fuses are suppose to go dont. Now I'm at a loss. Does anyone know a solution or have had this happen? Could really do with some help thanks.

Welcome aboard! I will try to do my best to help, although i have significantly less expertise than that of some other members. As for limp mode, i would check the codes. Once we get codes, we can better help you, as there a so many different causes for limp mode, ranging from a bad transmission, to a faulty sensor. For the interior light, i would check the wiring and see if something (switch) is functional and is capable of cutting power, as i think that's what it is (however, it could be a million other tings as well) for the door studs, you have to replace it with the right one... mine is very tall and thin, if that helps to find the right one. Ill check my fuse layout tomorrow, so you can see what mine looks like, in case one is out of place... if you can get more info (codes, wiring check etc), then we can better assist you.

That's the thing i cant get codes, there is no power to diagnostic scanner, both fuses to what I think is scanner and cig lighter are fine. But there is no power to it. The light is more of a door ajar, but no sound, and have gone around with wd40 and still nothing, there was a reverse camera but it was broken and so I removed it plus the wiring. I've attached a photo of fuse box, I used a black pen to mark some, however everything in the first two rows from left of photo are not working. Fuses 36 and 35 show they are. 31 and 34 and 23 nothing fits.

Which transmission? How do you know it’s stuck in 3rd gear?

Since you can’t pull codes (which are very helpful on the 5R55E), you may as well try dropping the pan and taking a look around. If you don’t find hard parts in the pan, that’s a good start. 5R55Es are notorious for blowing out separator plate gaskets.

It is a 5r55e. When I changed the transmission oil and filter everything seemed ok, no debris or hard parts. Just standard oil that needed changing and was slightly but not to low. Reason I think it's stuck in 3rd gear is when you drive now it you have to gently touch pedal and theres not much feel of power, if you put your foot down to take off from lights or a slight hill. Rpm shoots up and loses power like slipping a gear. When I got her she Parked, Reverse Gear worked as well as neutral. Now none of those work as well as drive is as I said sluggish. Doesn't feel like my other fords v6. I've also been told by some if computer thinks theres a problem with engine say with power supply as battery was completely wrong and half fuses dont work. It sends the transmission into limp mode automatically which is 3rd gear. But I cant get codes to check that.

If you are saying you have 15 or so dead circuits your problem is probably the fuse box itself.

Don’t drive the truck at all, you’ll just guarantee that you need a rebuild. Which you probably do already need.

Hence I've had her I've driven her a max twice, one was to my place, other was around block after changing oil and filter. I was think the same that I could burn it out hence haven't driven until I get codes. But that's where more of an issue is at this stage.

Without those circuits it’ll probably never run right. You’ll probably end up with a million codes.

honestly, at this point... idk... if it needs a full rebuild for that, and any other problems it might be having, it might be worth just sending it off to the next stage of its life... that's just my opinion, you can do what you want, but that's just my opinion.
