Im picking up a very good low mileage 91 soon for very cheap but the only problem is that it is red with a red cloth interior :( I can get free parts so im going to try to piece together an interior, I know that I can only use a 1st gen dash and front door panels, but what about seats (front and back) carpet, consoles, rear and hatch panels, headliner, interior panels, visors, handles etc. Are there any major color differences between the years?
Thanks in advance for all your help

I have heard that the door panels will interchange. The 91 at least has unique seat mounts. If you can modify whatever makes them different, then you could use any Explorer seat from later years. Compare your 93 seat to it. The hatches up to 97 will go on. Rugs, consoles, etc. should also swap. Good luck,
Don

I put 89 ranger door panels on 84 B II doors. They are the same, but I had to trim a little around the wing glass with a dremel. I think your will just swap over though.

you can modify the seat mounting points as suggested or re-use your current tracks on different seats. The tracks will swap onto at least 2nd gens.

oh, power seats and all that for an upgrade is another story.....

I have no problem with any electrical work, I just want the red interior out, even though its in great condition I still think it looks like crap (no offense to anyone else with a red interior) So I can reuse the front seat tracks, but what about the rear seats, and the biggest thing I'm worried about is color differences and the center console, are ther any major differences?

Gen 3 interior is completely different as far as I know.
The 91 does indeed have different front seat tracks, as they are leftovers from the bronco II. The door pannels are unique to the explorer, but a 91 explorer door panel would go on a 01 explorer door, and vice versa...
The rear seats from the first explorer till the 01 explorer should bolt in, no problem.

I'm not certain about any interior colors except for the tan color. from 91 till 94, they were pretty much the same color, 95-96 it went to a 'saddle' tan, which is much darker. in 97 they went back to a tan similar to the early years, and stuck with it till 01. The interior color of my mothers 2000 mountaineer is nearly an exact match to the interior of my 92

Good luck with your swap, I'm about to start a project of switching 98 sport seats into my 92 2 door, so I'll need a bit of luck too.

Thanks, I should be picking it up next week. What about the headliner, panels and accesorys?

i dont know about the seats (^^^) But ive peiced togeather every peice of first gen interior from the J-yards to fit into mine to problem. All except the seats. The Doors and all the rear panels will fit aslong as its from the same style as yours (IE 2dr, and 4dr door, rear panels do not interchange). The Hatch stuff will definatly. Visors, handles, headliner, consoles, trim bezel, will all fit no matter the year (91-94 atleast).

If you need to replace the Stock explorer interior door handles because your's broke, i do not recommend getting ones from the J-yard. Ive done it before, they always end up breaking again. Go to www.1aauto.com and buy their handles. Much thicker plastic then stock, and the mold in to look perfectly stock.

Im not exactly sure about the colors. It could of been just the cars i pulled from, but the Tan interior on some models were a lil more 'peacher' then others. But when i installed it in my truck i couldnt notice a difference unless i heald the two peices next to each other.

If your dealing with swapping from gen 1 to gen 1, everything will bolt in except for the front seat tracks. not sure about the accessories your talking about, but I know the parking brake assembly changed between 92 and 93 model years, there are also some minor changes to the dash, such as different steering wheel and horn pad/cruise buttons, the dash trim is a bit different, the climate controls were changed up just a bit, radio changed, vents on the passenger side became color keyed with the dash, along with the door handles becoming color keyed insted of black.
After 91, Ford didn't modify the metal part of the body at all till the new ones came out in 02. This is true of all the interior metal that the interior parts attach to. The front clip, hatch and tail light areas did change, but the door skins were not changed at all, the door handles and mirrors were changed though.
