1st gen high performance brake rotors ques ???

just received my warn manual hubs which i plan to install ASAP. in interest of not doing work twice i want to put some new rotors on while i'm at it. heh, i there right. here is the deal. the local auto part store cheapies warp after almost no use. i want a good high quality rotor. got any ideas??

thanks guys... i find it strange that the ART rotors are avail. from 1991-1999 and the powerslot rotors are avail. from 1993-up...

i wasn't even aware of a difference in the front end on a 1991-1994 x. what is the story there??

I have the ART rotors that Jason mentioned and I am very unhappy with them.

I have had two sets now and they both have sucked. Mine have been noisey and they vibrate like crazy. Add to that that I only have about 10,000 miles on them and they were noisy and vibrated from the begining each time.

Their customer service seems pretty good, they sent me a new set with very little questions asked and since I have to go through rotors and pads at least once a year I am not gonna bug them anymore because it has already been almost a year since I had my first set.

By the way Jason how have your ART brakes been? I have a 91 XLT 4door 4X4.

tirerack.com has Brembo rotors for 1st gen Xs for $56 each, $112 pair. A great deal if you ask me b/c I just ordered some. I think slotted are overrated, however, I do agree with the cryogenics though.

We now have 110,000 miles on 1 set of ART rotors on our 1992 xlt..

I use Performance friction pads.. (I tried brute stop once .. but the pad broke away from the backing)...

I change the pads when I have 1/4" of pad left.. (I change them on my terms)...

I've had 1 brake pad break (it broke into 3 pieces).. I was planning to change the pads the next week... (the pad had less than 1/4" of meat left in it)..

I have 1 gouge in the rotor now...

I have NEVER had them turned.. they are still straight.. no vibrations...

I know I'm hard on the front brakes since my auto adjusters in the rear dont' work right (one doesn't work at all).. so I use more front brakes than rear brakes...

After my wheel fell off at 50mph, I needed some replacement rotors. I simply went to pep boys and bought their rotors for like $20 a side. They are great! Ive had them for a while now and when other people drive my truck the first thing they comment on is how good the brakes are. =)

i am in a similar situation. the auto adjusters only adjust "automatically" when you use the parking brake which i never use. adjusting them manually should probably be done everytime you change the oil but i never do [i always change my oil, i never adjust the rear brakes]...

now, one of my drums also seems to be a little out of round so i have the rears adjusted out a little. as you can imagine it's hell on the fronts. it sucks, my brakes are all new [rotors, pads, shoes, drums, wheel cyls, etc]. less than 10k miles on this **** [prolly way less, it's all on;y like two months old] and it's all hosed. i gotta get some better quality brake parts!!!

I wonder why I am having such troubles with my ART rotors?

The noise and vibration under braking is unbearable and its LOUD.

Are the brake pads chattering?

If so, what type of pads are you using? and are the calipers on tight? (did you replace the slide pins)?

I picked up a new vibration when braking, but mine is from a bad sector shaft (the shaft that the pitman arm connects to on the steering box)...

I was wondering if anybody has changed from their drum brakes to disc on the rear wheel,without changing the axle. I think that truckperformance has a kit for this. I was wondering about doing this. Would it mess with the abs? Mike

my two cents of "guess"timation.

a brake upgrade kit for an ABS system should come with a sensor to incorporate the new system with the vehicles ABS. that should be stated in the literature for the kit.

if not, it makes little difference, i'd take 4 wheel disk non-ABS setup over a disk/drum ABS setup anyday
