Hi there - pround new owner of a 2000 North Face in East Sussex! Glad I found this forum as in 3 weeks of ownership and 30 x 50 mile commutes (on a motorbike) I havent see another Explorer!

I'm going to have a read through all the other threads but I do have one question (apologies if its on another thread on page 14!). I would like to get some new alloys for my baby and wondered if anyone has any recommendations for suppliers. Also as my technical knowledge is a big fat zero - if I changed wheel size would it have an effect on the speedo, rev counter, odometer? Can this be corrected? Also would it have any effect on the 4wd system - not sure about hubs etc?

Thanks

Welcome to the site.

You can fit any tyre/rim combination that fits and as long as the overall diameter is the same as stock then speedo etc will be fine. I went from 255*70*16 to 265*75*16 and did notice a speedo change but all to the better , according to the sat nav unit. The speedo is now more accurate than it was. It used to read 70 when actual speed was 66 now reads 70 and speed is 69. :D

thanks Howard - I was thinking more of going in up size to 18 or maybe even 20 if I can find a good deal - I assume then as the diameter will change then everything will need recalibrating? Is that something a dealer could do for me?

cheers

The diameter I am talking about is the overall one which is the outer edge of the tyre. So for example the standard 255*70*16 tyre gives a diameter of (255/25.4)*0.7*2+16=30.055 inches. So an 18" rim would mean that the tyre profile should be 6.0275 inches which would give the same overall diameter and therefore no change.

Boy its been a long time since my o level maths days!!

Cool so a 255 60 18" should work?
On a 18 inch rim (255/25.4)*0.6*2+18=30.04 inches!!

I am in the presence of genius! Im not worthy! Im not worthy! :notworthy

Fab - now just need to find some wheels and tyres!!

Thanks for all the help - much appreciated!!
