1) I have had my explorer for about 2 years now (1994 4.0 v6 manual explorer sport 2wd). Ever since I got it when ever I accelerate their is a loud nasty pinging in the engine. The only way I have found to fix this this, is fill my car with premium gasoline(usually 92 octane or higher) but lately I have been cutting back on my spending and went back to the cheaper regular unleaded. Is there anyone who has a had a similar problem who knows how to fix it or what I can do to make it better. Thanks ahead of time.

2)My explorer lacks the hp I would like to have. What are a few ways I can add more horsepower without spending a ridiculously amount of money. I need more power!!!!

Ahhh! you have found the mystery of the unknown pinging. As far as I know, no one knows the problem, but everyone has it. Guys, correct me it I'm wrong. Nothing is seriously wrong though. Better gas does reduce it though.

As far as more power, get a KKM and a slightly larger catback and maybe a chip. Also try using the search, and you will find a lot more info.

Both problems are likely related.

There are 2 things you can do to alleviate the pinging.
1.Clean the MAF sensor
2.Tighten the intake manifold bolts

pinging could be carbon build up in engine....have you heard bout the Sea Foam and Power Foam stuff? do a search and check that out...perhaps could be the 3-4 dollar fix you need.

FWIW the pinging on my 4.0 OHV was fixed by tightening the lower intake manifold bolts.
