2 the thumb button onthe auto transmisison gear shift is incredibly difficult to depress even requiring a two handed approach to depress it . i am using the brake peadal at the same time as im trying to shift out of park anyone else have this problem and if so how did you solve it hopefully not a new gearbox lol cheers

The 'thumb' button you are referring to... do you mean the OD button?

you do know that to shift a column shift you pull it towards you then pull up or down to shift... right?

the button on the end is an electrical button for switching on and off the over drive, not to release the shifter

its an automatic gear box im not referring to the od button im talking about the button you have to press to move from PARK into reverse then drive at no point in my op did i say column shift . this button is soo stif i have to use both hands to push the button in. its only stiff when i move from PARK when i do move it from park into drive the button is easy to move ONCE its out of park

the part you have pictured is not from a 99 or 2000 ford explorer

this is a first gen picture, but the part is similar

i know its not but the gearshift is the same thats the point i was trying to get across and its a uk explorer not a us one .

Your arae describing a standars floor mounted ****fer. If the button is very stiff it may be the parking lock pin. Does it still roll in park or does the gearbox lock

Guys, you're missing one important clue: He's in the UK with a RIGHT HAND DRIVE Explorer. The right hand drivers have a floor shift for the automatic transmission, not a column shifter. Like with all floor shifters built in the last 20 years, there is a button on the side you have to depress that acts in conjunction with the brake-shift interlock just like our US trucks do, but on the floor shift, of course.

The first question I'd ask about the problem: Are your brake lights working? The brake on-off switch feeds power to the interlock (along with switched power from the key). A common problem is for the brake on-off switch to go bad over time, and/or the fuse for the brake switch to blow if a bulb shorts-out. Any of them will kill the brake power to the interlock, and it will fight it.

Try this: Turn the ignition key to the 'unlock' position, but not the RUN position. Will it shift freely? If so, the interlock is what you're fighting against. Odds are it's the afore-mentioned wiring/power issue as the interlock failures are pretty rare, though not impossible.

Good luck!

well, haveing never seen a uk explorer i had no idea, i thought it just had a backward column shift as a floor shift would mean a redesign. silly ford, hire me and ill show you how to save money.

well its all irelevant now my poor explorer has been rear ended and the tow bar has bent the chassis at the spring hanger im thinking the insurance company is gonna write it off too pity theres not a broken light or a dented panel on it the bumper and tow bar took the hit but the frame is bent . its also got a 2500£ gas lpg conversion on it .

the lpg? its liquid petroleum gas car has been converted to use lpg as alternative fuel . its half the price of petrol
