I have been having this clunk in the drivetrain for awhile now. The trans was rebuilt in Feb. because we had lost overdrive. Even before that the clunk was there just not as bad as now. I am wondering if it could be the u-joints, driveline or trans/transfer case. It has 74,000 or so on it. I remember seeing somewhere that somebody had a similar problem and it ended up being the slip yoke going into the transfer case. I can't remember if mine has that style or not. Any info would be helpful.

Mike,

If your tranny is still under warranty from the shop who rebuilt it, I would take it in to them and have them look at it. It definitely sounds like a tranny problem to me. Check your fluid and see if it smells burnt or is brownish.

Where is Puyallup? I grew up in Pullman many many years ago.

Good luck

Every time I put mine in reverse I hear the clunking too. I replaced the u joints a month ago and I found out when I had the driveline out that it was really the expansion / contraction joint in the middle of the driveline that was worn. You can check yours by going under the truck and turning the rear driveline opposite directions at the expansion joint and see if there is any movement. Hope this helps.
