I just had a guy e mail me because he wants to buy a tranny I have from a 95 parts truck, he says he has a 96 and that there are 2 different trannys for that year?????? One hold 3 quarts and the other holds 6? I think he is a little off, but I could be wrong, as far as I am concerned, 96 and 95 are both 4R55E trannys, right? He asked me to look at my dipstick, because his says to run Mercron fluid and not Dextron. I thought you always ran Mercron in Explorer trannys? Does anyone have any advice for me to tell this guy so he can get his act straight? Thanks a million, Jack

Maybe he is thinking of different configurations for the 4R55E. The 4WD uses a deeper pan, and filter along with a different extension housing (4X4 extension housing with a different tail shaft). The 4R44E was used with the 3.0 L. The 4R55E was used on the 4.0 L Explorers which only came with the 4.0 L, but also came as either a 2X4, or 4X4.

Is it possible he is thinking of the difference between V6 and V8 trannies? As noted, in Explorers with the 4.0 OHV (only V6 option in Explorers), they only put the 4R55E. In V8 Explorers ('96 was first year for V8), they used the 4R70W. Of course, '95 didn't have a V8 option.

Are the 4R55E and 4R70W interchangable with the OHC?
