2000 XLT
Hello all,

First off, I'm not a car guy, so looking for info. I have a 2000 XLT, recently installed dual exhaust with ss409, eveything else stock, basically. I'm about to get Throttle body spacer, Cold air intake and performance chip installed 1/7/06. I've been stalling out of late (twice, so far), and it's been suggested that IAC is gone/going. I can keep it going with foot on gas, but gotta keep this up with brake on if I'm just idling, sitting at a light, etc.. Where is it, what does it look like, and how to I test/repair/replace this little gem? Anyone got a manual/video with GOOD quality pics on placement and installation? I'm not a car guy, but I'm an everything else guy, so should be able to replace/repair (unless I need to get it in the air, I guess ;)).

Thanks, and Happy Whatever!

Bill

Ok first off welcome to the site. This problem has been taken care of 1,000 times. Is there a loud hum coming from the engine as well? do a search for the IAC and you'll find out all the info you could want. Depending on your engine it depends onthe location. Good luck.

Assuming you have a SOHC engine, remove the 4 screws that cover the engine (the cover says "SOHC" so you'll know). The IAC is a silver thingy with a plug going into it, right near the throttle body. Two bolts hold it in place. Dead easy to service. Definitely try the search function to see lots of good threads on how it's done. I had a 2000 Sport with SOHC 4.0 engine and had the IAC off in a minute and I'm a horrible mechanic.

It's even more visible on the 5.0 if that's what you have (on top of the TB).

Do NOT get a throttle body spacer. Expensive snake oil. You won't find much good press on this site re: their effectiveness.

Thanks for the tip! I've already set up the appointment with this guy, whom I've come to trust, to install the spacer (which I've already paid for, and he has rec'd this), the cold air intake and performance chip, and I'd have to pay a restocking and shipping fee to return it. I'll see how things go, but thanks for the heads up, and your information here. The guy who's doing my work is also going to check the IAC for me, so if that is the problem, I'll replace it myself. Any idea how involved the IAC is to replace? I don't have a garage, so spending an hour or more in the driveway at 20 degrees does not sound like any fun.

Thanks,

Bill

Oh, and yes, it's 4.0 SOHC. I've also had remote start on it for over a year, with no problems.

10 minutes tops!

Follow the directions Celly gave you and you'll have no problems.

IACs are dead easy to replace. 10 minutes is on the high side. More like 5.

re: Throttle body spacers, they do nothing for fuel injected applications. Pay the restocking fees and be done with it. It'll be cheaper than re-selling it at a loss when you realize we're right! Seriously, use "Throttle Body Spacer" as a search term on this site and you'll be hard pressed to find that it does anything to improve performance or mileage in our applications.

Hi all, found this excellent link on IAC valve location, testing and replacement, if necessary:

Dead Link Removed

I'm going try this out this weekend, and will let you know how it goes. Hope it helps!

Happy Whatever! (Politically Correct Season greetings) ;)

BTW, all, thanks for the advice. Bought the IAC valve at Autozone for 40 Bucks, and as advertised here, took me 10 minutes to replace. Car is running fine since then! Saved about 200 bucks for a simple fix, based on what the Ford shop was going to charge me for the part (132.00) and labor (92.00/hr). Bastids! Happy New Year all!

You may want to consider supporting the site that just saved you $200.00, by becoming Elite

Not saying you have to. Just a way to say thanks and help out the next guy.

I'm with Monmix. This site has saved me a TON of money since I found it. Then again, I'm also spending a lot more because I'm always coming up with ideas for new mods thanks to everyone here. ;)

!!!!!!!!!!!IAC for $40? wow The autozone here in NYC wanted $170. That included a "core" fee which means basically I PAY for the pleasure of them "disposing" it for me. That was a bit much, I saw one online cheaper and ordered it. In the mean time i'll clean it and the MAF. Many of these parts are realitivly cheap and can alleviate many minor annoyances such as rough idles and hesitation.

Actually, the IAC was 79.99 at Autozone, but 39.99 on their site. I went to the store and told them this, proved it to them using their (dial-up - ugh!) internet connection, and they matched it. I do this a for pretty much anything I buy. As a matter of fact, I bought a 50" Samsung DLP (Model 5063) at Bestbuy.com earlier this year, and advised that I would pick up at a lcoal store. They would not honor the free harmony remote (150.00 value) that the online store was giving, so I said that this meant they were competitors. They agreed (after speaking to management), and they price matched themsleves (10%), and I got it for the difference (2500.00 - 250.00) and paid 2250.00. The worst anyone can say is "no" if you ask. Anyhoo, I just sent in my money to become "Elite", so that should keep those whose first comment about me not being elite and I should send in some money happy for a while ;). Happy New Year all!

A core fee is assessed on a item in which they want you to return your old part because it will be rebuilt and sold again as refurbished. Alternators and starters are very commonly sold like that, in pretty much every parts store. If Auto Zone charged you for a core on an IAC, I'd be surprised but you should get your money back when you take the old part back. That's how cores work.

BTW, they didn't even ask for mine, and I'll be damned if I'm going to give 'em my old parts and have them charge me for it.

So, now that I'm "elite", how do I get pics of the wheels on the site?

Thx!
