2000 Ford Explorer Temp Sensor and MAF cleaned?

my wife just called me asking why her check engine light came on and she said she can go past 50 but it wont really let her go past 60. does anyone have any idea what this problem can be?

PLEASE HELP

EDIT, THE CAR CAN GO OVER 60MPH, THATS JUST SHE GOT SCARED AND DIDNT TAKE IT OVER 60MPH WHEN SHE SEEN THE LIGHT COME ON, SO THE CAR WILL GO OVER 60 .. sorry!

how often do the temp sensors go bad on these models?

You'll need to get the codes read first, auto zone usually reads them for free. Then we'll be able to help out a great deal more. Sounds like the truck went into limp home mode.

ok so i took her car to get in the zone auto zone yeahh and the codes that came back were:
P0125, P0171, P0174

the coolant temperature sensor needs replaced (autozone sold me the damn switch, which is currently in the car right now) , so i bought a new sensor today..

and the other one its throwing is the MAF needs cleaned or something?

what do i need to do to clean the maf.. could it just be the air filter that needs replaced, can that throw off a code that has to do with a maf code?

to clean the maf either use carb cleaner that is safe for o2 sensors or a can of CO contact cleaner. Both can be purchased at any local parts place. then open the air box and spray the maf with the cleaner. Do not brush or wipe the sensor all you need to do is spray it clean.

If your air cleaner is a rechargable oil type cleaner then yes it can effect the MAF since the oil from air cleaner can get onto the maf and cause it's readings to be off. However a regular air filter (dry filter) should not effect the maf in anyway.

I would just buy maf cleaner.

so where exactly do i spray?

If you look at the picture on the can of cleaner I posted, you'll spray inside the tube paying special attention to the thing hanging in the middle. Just spray. Don't wipe. You don't want to physically touch the sensor.

The P0171 and P0174 codes make me wonder if the OOM12 recall has been done?

thanks for your reply!

question: what is the OOM12 recall? is it on recalldata.com or whatever that website is? where do i find documents to get this recall fixed? more info would be appreciated thanks!

the oom12 is an upgrade kit for two problem encountered with the SOHC engine.

the first was leaky oring seals that caused anything from an idle stumble to complete stalls at idle. The orings are located on the upper and lower intake (the big plastic parts on top of the engine) the stock ones were too thin and started to create a vacuum leak at a low mileage.

The kit also included a new front cam chain tensionser that has an oil resovoir built into it. It was supposed to solve the timing chain rattle on startup issue. There is also an oil flow restrictor (looks like a plastic pencil) that you insert into the oil passage for the front cam chain tensioner. This ( I beleive) helps to balance the oil flow to the tensioner.

It is possible that you could have a vacuum leak, but one severe enough to cause the engine to not surpass 60mph I would think would cause some major stalling issues at idle as well.

In either case a vacuum test should identify the problem.

Personally I would start with the basics and go from there
1) check plugs and wires
2) fuel pressure
3) vacuum test
4) run a KOER test to identify any unstored problem reports

With those four things you we should be able to pinpoint a problem.

but what would make his truck go into safe mode out of all that? It would just make it run crappy, right?

hey guys, i updated the topic because my wife told me wrong. she was just scared to take it over 60mph. i drove it and it does go over 60 mph perfectly fine ....

but i need to replace the temp sensor and clean the maf which i am doing tomorrow. ill keep you all updated. thanks for all the replys!

Ahh that makes more sense, the whole 60mph thing really threw me for a loop :dunno:

I would just buy maf cleaner.

thanks for the info bro!

i used this stuff on the maf and the plug it plugs into, and it fixed the check engine light. its no longer on right now !!

just wanted to give an update like i said i would.... how often does the MAF need to be cleaned? how often do you need 2 change your air filter?

thanks again guys, EF rules!:thumbsup::salute:

The air filter should be changed out at least every year, although if you drive offroad in dusty conditions that will be greatly reduced. I usually change out my filter 2 times a year because I drive offroad a few times a year.

I clean my maf 2 times a year, oh and always use dielectric grease on all my electrical connections. The ecu, in some cases is reading very sensitive values from the sensors. Dielectric grease will ensure that there is no oxidation in there to increase the resistance of the connectors thereby throwing off the correct values from the sensors.
