2000 Ford Explorer V8
Hello all,

Im new to the forums. I have been following alot of these posts and found out quite a few good topics that I have used. Thanks for all the information thus far =).

Any who ive had this on going issue, and I got to the point where I would finally just ask. My 2000 Explorer V8 has been giving me some small issues lately. When I start it cold it starts fine with minimal hesitations. But after about 15-20 mins of driving and then I park it, if I let it sit say another 10-15mins before I start it back it. I wont start right away. Takes usually 6-12 engine rotations before it actually starts. The other issue I have noticed with it is... If I pull out onto traffic and just say I floor it. It doesnt seem to have any low end power. But once it gets going to about 3900-4200rpm it really takes off. I have a full exhaust on it going to a borla muffler I welded up and a K/N intake. So you can really hear the sound changes during this. Im positive they are linked together some how.

I just changed the plugs, fuel filter, new k/n filter, and cam sensor. I did notice on the coil on the drivers side that the plug for it was actually cracked and lose. But I dont see that being the issue, because it happens whether it is dry or wet out. Im a mechanic so... Diagnosing issues yous recommend is not a real issue. I lie im a VW mechanic but I work on everything. I havent gotten around to hanging a fuel pressure gauge on it yet. We are moving so all my real tools are packed away. I scanned it 2-3 times and have not got any codes or anything in the history.

Its a 2000 Explorer V8 AWD, with 198,000. The motor is a jasper replacement I put in about 9 months ago. It has approximately 10,000 miles on it. It was a short block so no accesories or any electronics were on it.

Thanks for any info in advance

Hot start problem, sooo.........When starting cold, PCM strives to keep running by enriching fuel/air mixture, like the last-world's choke did. In fact, emissions are ignored until the engine reaches a certain temp.

Sounds like hot start situation is not getting enough fuel up front, quickly enough. Fuel filter first, pump next, check fuel pressure before these 2 would be best......

Just my opinion. imp

Yeah, I was thinking pump also. I did the filter already so that outta the question. I heard a few other scenarios that I thought might of been brough up. Ill wait to here from some others. Thanks for the input. Ill hang a gauge on it sometime tommorw.

Thanks again and in advance

What brand of plugs did you use? I had a similar problem. I was using NGKrap plugs and found that the electrodes were completely gone after less than 10,000 km. (6000 miles). I switched to Autolites and a new set of Aurora wires (Thanks Celly ) and no more hot start issues. It also cleared up my off idle stumble and pinging problem as well.

Good luck

Have you cleaned the MAF? It's amazing how much a dirty MAF will affect performance and how many little issues it will cause.

K/N filters are notorious for oiling down the MAF sensor.
