2000 for explorer xls
Hello,
I am having a problem with my 2000 ford explorer. It has 157,000 miles on it and on Friday I was driving it and at a stop sign it started to shake pretty bad. When I accerated it got worse and there was a weird smell, like a burning plastic smell. I pulled over and called my brother to ask what the problem could be. I left the car running for a while as I talked to him to try to figure out what the problem was and all of a sudden white smoke started coming out of the exhaust. My brother then quickly told me to turn of the engine, which I did, and to try to start it again but it wouldnt start. I decided to try again but with my foot on the gas pedal and it started up no problem. After running for a few minutes the smoke came out of the exhaust again. A man drove by and told me to turn my car off immedialty because I had a blown head gasket and if I didnt turn it off I was going to blow my engine. My car did not over heat nor did it have a "sweet" smell as I read online a blown head gasket will do. I had all four heads replaced about a year and a half to 2 years ago and I had only put on about 10-15k miles on it since. i checked the transmission fluid and there is about 2 inches in the resiviour and it was a clear orange color and the oil was a little low but it was a dark brown color (I was told to look for water or transmission fluid in the oil)
I had noticed a few other things before this all happened. 1. the transmission would slip at 15mph but if I would slam on the brakes hard it would fix itself. 2. while sitting at a light the car would "jerk" almost like it would want to stall but didnt (a few times I had to look in my rear view mirror cause it felt like someone from behind tapped my bumper). 3. while accelerating I would hear a very faint high pitched whistling and last..every time I brake it would feel like my front brakes were grinding but I was told that was my exhaust because I have an after market exhaust which makes it loud.
I was told that I have a blown head gasket but the tow truck driver and my brother told me it sounds like I just need a good tune up and a new coil pack?(not sure if thats what he said)
If it is a blown head gasket could I, or should I go back to ford and demand they fix it again since I just had all 4 (suppoidly) replaced?
It is sitting at my mechanic and he is very busy and wont be able to look at it at least until tuesday or wednesday.
Any feedback is much appreciated.
thanks in advance!!

p.s. it wasn't the transmission fluid that was orage..it was anitfreeze...sorry

white smoke in the exhaust is usually the sign of water in the engine = head gasket. The whistling you heard was most likely air flow at the gasket. The water won't always mix with the oil and vice versa, you can blow antifreeze out the side of the block too.
